Officer Violet Babineaux is called to the scene of a suicide where she finds her childhood friend Charlotte Labarre lying on a blood-soaked couch with a gun in her hand. Violet believes she could have prevented her suicide with a simple call. While placed on administrative leave, guilt drives her to investigate on her own, starting with Psychology Professor Daniel Russo who had an inappropriate relationship with Charlotte, his student. Unsure about Dr. Russo's involvement, Violet presents a bold conspiracy theory involving cops to her partner Lenny Blake, but he and Homicide Detective Walter Wild dismiss her despite the evidence. When Violet finally acquires an elusive piece to the puzzle, the answers are far worse than not knowing.

I'll admit, I purchased this book because of the title. My husband and I visited New Orleans during the 1984 Worlds Fair (stayed in the French Quarter) and I have been hopelessly in love with anything pertaining to it ever since. It didn't take me long to realize I'd found a jewel of a book. When Officer Violet Babineaux discovers Charlotte Labarre has committed suicide, she can't believe it and blames herself for not being more attentive to her best friend. When she begins to suspect Charlotte was murdered, no one is willing to listen because the evidence doesn't point to anyone else being involved. Violet sets out on her own and continues to dig into Charlotte's life and friends. With each new clue, she becomes more certain her theory is correct, but these actions put her job in jeopardy. Then, as she get closer to discovering the truth, her life is in jeopardy.Product details

I like that it was a lot mystery.
Love all things NOLA and this book did not disappoint! Worth every minute and will read more from this author.
this book is one that shows one cop. who is evil and believes that he can kill people and get by with it.
This is not your typical crime fiction book. I must say that I did enjoy the book and the author did a fantastic job in making New Orleans live and breathe. There is a tad bit of erotica, so skip this book if this makes you uneasy. Otherwise, I highly recommend.
I am a fan of New Orleans mystery/suspense books and this is an excellent one. This should be a series. This story about a seemingly wayward detective is suspense filled and sometimes surprisingly sexual made it difficult to put down. A touch of voodoo doesn't hurt either. The ending was a complete shocker I never saw coming. Loved this book!
Ok read with some not so apparent clues. I read the book straight through because it held my interest, and I wanted to see the plot unravel. A good book but seemed to be missing just an nth of depth or intensity. As I read, I felt that I was watching from the sidelines instead of actually being in the "thick of things".
Holy Crap! I started this book and could not put it down. Violet is a cop in New Orleans and just found her childhood friend dead at a crime scene. She is on a roller coaster ride to find out what really happened. In her heart she know's that Charlotte did not do this to herself. She follows her instincts and meets some of Charlottes friends. There's Doctor Danny and Rhonda, but who wanted her dead? There are more twists and turns to find the truth and what a surprise it is. Great read and what and ending. Wow.
